The Italian side, which rises from Livigno, has no bends and the very long straights are interspersed with short slight slopes. The road does not directly overlook any particularly important mountain. The other side has a more tortuous course but allows, at times, to admire some Rhaetian mountains. It has the particularity of connecting a politically Swiss valley located south of the Alps (the Val Poschiavo, belonging to the Adda basin) with a politically Italian valley located north of the Alps (the Livigno valley, belonging to the Inn basin ), while from a geographical point of view the situation is reversed.

At the pass there is the customs office as the territory of Livigno is a duty-free area. The pass is conventionally the border point between the Lepontine Alps to the east and the Pennine Alps to the west. It takes its name from the village of Simplon, located on the southern slope of the pass in Swiss territory. The Sempione pass is known for the historic communication route that connects Domodossola to Brig as well as for the Sempione Tunnel, an imposing railway engineering work opened in 1906 that connects Iselle di Trasquera to Brig. On the Sempione hill is the Sempione Hospice, wanted by the Canons of the Gran San Bernardo and built in 1666, which can accommodate up to 130 people.

Splugen PassCLOSE
 View on map

The Passo dello Spluga, (in German: Splugenpass), is one of the most important passes in the Alps, known since ancient times for its easy transit. Located on the Italian-Swiss border at 2,114 m, it connects the upper Valle Spluga with the upper Rhine valley (Rheinwald). Its importance is not only historical and logistic but also geological, as it divides the stratum to the west with the stratum Suretta to the east. Traditionally it divides the Lepontine Alps from the Rhaetian Alps and, according to the traditional bipartition of the Alps in use in the other countries of the Alpine chain, taken from the SOIUSA classification, it divides the Western Alps from the Eastern Alps. The toponym Spluga, widespread in many parts of the Alpine arc, would refer to the Latin term spelunca or cave, signaling the presence of caves probably inhabited by wildlife, especially bears.

Stelvio PassCLOSE
 View on map

The pass is located near the border with the Swiss Grisons, to which it is connected via the nearby Giogo di Santa Maria/Umbrail Pass. The Stelvio is an important summer connection especially for its tourist and sporting vocation, not only for ski and mountain tourism, but also because it is a popular destination for cyclists and motorcyclists. The pass is located within the Stelvio National Park, near important massifs such as Monte Livrio, Ortles and Monte Scorluzzo.

St. Mark's PassCLOSE
 View on map

Passo San Marco (altitude 1,991 m a.s.l.) is a road pass as well as the highest hill in the Province of Bergamo and connects Val Brembana to Valtellina. The Valtellina side reaches slopes of 12% while the Brembano side reaches peaks of 16%. The pass is about 26 km from Morbegno and 16 from Olmo al Brembo. At the pass it is possible to admire the effigies of the then Republic of Venice who built this road for economic development with the Swiss valleys. On the orobic side of the pass is the Rifugio C San Marco, for years the roadman's house of the San Marco Pass and one of the oldest refuges in the Alps, built in 1593. Passo TonaleCLOSE
 View on map

Passo del Tonale, located at 1,883 m a.s.l., is an alpine pass in the southern Rhaetian Alps which divides the Ortles Alps to the north and the Adamello and Presanella Alps to the south. It connects the Val di Sole (Municipality of Vermiglio) with the Upper Valle Camonica (Ponte di Legno). Located on the administrative border between the Province of Brescia and the Province of Trento, it has developed urbanistically in recent decades outside the rules, with excessive building speculation which has led to the strong contrast between the decidedly oversized architecture and the wonderful surrounding environmental context, definitively destroying the serene mountain landscape that still characterized it in the 1960s. A tourist center in both summer and winter, Passo del Tonale is a base for numerous mountaineering and hiking itineraries that allow you to get in touch with the nature of the Rhaetian Alps and the historical reality of the White War which here left numerous signs still alive in the landscape. The mountains surrounding Passo del Tonale were, in fact, the scene of battles during the First World War: a monumental shrine built in the 1930s now houses the remains of over 800 Italian and Austro-Hungarian fallen soldiers. In the area it is possible to visit the Museum of the White War in Adamello a Temù, as well as the interesting collections of memorabilia from Vermiglio and Pejo. Tonale can be reached via the State Road 42 of Tonale and Mendola, which connects Treviglio in the Province of Bergamo with Bolzano through the two homonymous passes.

Umbrail passCLOSE
 View on map

The Giogo di Santa Maria or Passo dell'Umbrail (in Romansh Pass dal Umbrail, in German Umbrailpass or Wormserjoch) (2,503 m) is an alpine pass located in the western Rhaetian Alps near the Italian-Swiss border. It is located near the Stelvio pass and was opened in 1901. From the pass you have a view of the Val Monastero, the Valle di Fraele, the Valtellina and the Val di Trafoi. It can be reached from the IV Cantoniera of the Stelvio Pass. From the game it is possible to go down to Switzerland, or to Santa Maria, through a small road (for 2.5 kilometers even a dirt road), which is narrow and sloping and leads in 13 kilometers to the Val Monastero, after 1,126 meters in altitude.

Vereina Pass TunnelOPEN
 View on map

The Vereina tunnel is located in eastern Switzerland and, at 19,058 metres, is the longest railway tunnel in the Swiss RhB/MGB transport network. The service is based on regional train timetables between Scuol-Tarasp and Chur, supplemented every 30 minutes by shuttle trains for transporting road vehicles between the two valleys connected through the tunnel and for freight trains. The tunnel has a single track, with splitting of the tracks in strategic points to allow the simultaneous passage of trains arriving from the opposite portal. It is an alternative connection to the one offered by the Fluela pass which is closed during the winter.
